In an attempt to come up with some sort of theme I can use for updates every now and again, I present Something Old, Something New which does as it says; I’ll give you an old song (for the sake of argument, anything over 20 years old.. maybe) and a new track and give some background to the band/album. So for the first ever one I present;

Neil Young – Down By The River

From the 1969 album ‘Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere’

Released in 1969, this was Candaian Neil Young’s second solo album and his first with his backing band ‘Crazy Horse’ and peaked at #34 in the American Billboard Chart. Written by Young when he had a fever, it’s one of his most well known tracks and he plays it live to this day. ranging from short renditions to almost half hour long jams.

You can catch Neil Young at one of many shows and festivals he’s playing round North America and Europe over the next few months.

Metric – Gold Guns Girls

From the 2009 album ‘Fantasies’

‘Gold Guns Girls’ is the 5th track off the 4th studio album by the New York/Canadian band. They’ve been together since 1998 and have been writing and recording ever since as well as undertaking various side projects; for instance, the rather lovely singer Emily Haines and guitarist James Shaw also makeup part of the Candian ‘supergroup’ Broken Social Scene.

Metric are currently part way through a huge North American and European tour.. I’ll see you all at the gig at the Electric Ballroom in Camden!
